HARARE —The Alexandra Sports Club was transformed into a shrine of timeless African music on Saturday night as Malian Afro-pop legend Salif Keita delivered a masterclass performance at the highly anticipated Ecobank Legends Night.
At 77, the icon fondly known as the “Golden Voice of Africa” proved that true greatness only matures with time like wine, commanding the stage with the effortless charisma, vocal power and spiritual energy that made him a global superstar over five decades ago.
From the moment he stepped onto the stage in his signature white flowing attire, Keita had the crowd in the palm of his hand. Backed by a tight live band, he took fans on a nostalgic yet fresh journey through his rich catalogue, blending classic Afro-pop anthems with soulful ballads that had thousands singing, dancing and waving in unison.
Despite his age, Keita showed no signs of slowing down. His soaring vocals, intricate rhythms and magnetic stage presence were a reminder of why he remains one of Africa’s most celebrated live performers.
Sharing the stage was another ageless marvel, 69-year-old Congolese rumba queen Yondo Sister, who brought her own brand of fire and elegance. The “Queen of Rumba” delivered a sensational, high-energy set that kept fans on their feet, proving that the golden era of African music is still very much alive.
The local flag was flown high by Afro-fusion outfit Intotal, who were a marvel to watch. The talented group set the tone for the evening with a polished and energetic performance, mixing contemporary sounds with traditional beats and earning loud cheers from the home crowd. Their display was clear proof that Zimbabwean talent can hold its own alongside continental giants.
For many in attendance, the concert was more than just music , it was a celebration of heritage, unity and longevity. The Ecobank Legends Night lived up to its billing, bringing together generations of music lovers under one roof.
As the night ended with a standing ovation for Keita, one message was clear, legends don’t fade, they evolve.
