Chigo Nyasulu
MALAWIAN saxophonist, vocalist and cultural music artist Chigo Dinga Nyasulu is seeking collaboration with a Zimbabwean artist as he looks to promote African culture and strengthen musical ties between Malawi and Zimbabwe.
Based in Lilongwe, Nyasulu is the founder of Tumbungonde Roots Music, a project inspired by the traditions, languages and heritage of Northern Malawi, particularly the Tumbuka and Ngonde cultures.
The experienced musician, who began playing saxophone in 2013, blends authentic Malawian traditional sounds with saxophone jazz, soft music and contemporary creativity.
Nyasulu is particularly interested in working with Zimbabwean artists who share his passion for African roots, traditional music and cultural preservation.
He believes the cultural similarities between Malawi and Zimbabwe create an opportunity for artists from both countries to learn from one another and produce meaningful music.
His vision follows a tradition of African musicians crossing borders to create music together. The late Zimbabwean music icon Oliver “Tuku” Mtukudzi, for example, collaborated with South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela, including on “Tapera,” demonstrating how musical partnerships can connect artists and audiences across national boundaries.
Through his proposed collaboration, Nyasulu hopes to introduce his Tumbungonde Roots Music to Zimbabwean audiences while promoting African culture, unity and cross-border musical exchange.
His repertoire includes original compositions such as Sono Mwatola, Mizimu Yili Nase, Tamanya, Nkhwewelera, Waliko, Chete and Wakwawo.
