Chitungwiza Municipality has resumed the rehabilitation of the Seke Outfall sewer line as part of its ongoing efforts to improve sewer infrastructure and reduce sewer bursts.
According to the local authority:
“The project involves the laying of 600mm diameter Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) pipes from Unit M towards Unit O. Work is currently underway near Jambanja Market in Unit M.
The rehabilitation works are being funded through Council’s own resources, with glass-reinforced pipes (GRP) donated under the African Development Bank (AfDB) Zim Fund.”
Excavation is being carried out using the Municipality’s 37.5-tonne excavator, which was procured in 2025 to strengthen Council’s capacity to undertake major infrastructure rehabilitation projects.
Chitungwiza Municipality added:
“Once completed, the project is expected to bring significant relief to residents in the Seke area by reducing recurring sewer blockages and bursts.
The rehabilitation process involves replacing ageing concrete sewer pipes with modern GRP pipes, which are more durable, corrosion-resistant and have a longer service life improving the sewer network.”
Residents and local groups have faced persistent raw sewage overflows and have recently taken legal action against the council regarding public health concerns in high-density suburbs.
According to a recent Auditor General’s report, Chitungwiza Town Council has operated without a functioning sewer treatment plant for more than seven years, a situation that has fuelled frequent sewer bursts, exposed thousands of residents to serious public health risks and led to the discharge of untreated sewage into Hunyani River.
