Substance-abusing youth are at higher risk than nonusers for mental health problems, including depression, conduct problems, personality
disorders, suicidal thoughts, attempted suicide, and suicide.

People with addiction often have one or more associated health issues, which could include lung or heart disease, stroke, cancer, or mental health conditions. Imaging scans, chest X-rays, and blood tests can show the damaging effects of long-term drug use throughout the body.

The goal of detoxification, also called “detox” or withdrawal therapy,
is to enable you to stop taking the addicting drug as quickly and
safely as possible. For some people, it may be safe to undergo
withdrawal therapy on an outpatient basis. Others may need admission
to a hospital or a residential treatment center.

Some alter your perceptions and can cause hallucinations. Others may
make you feel numb. Long-term use and larger doses have negative
effects that can seriously harm your health, even cause death,
including disease risks from sharing needles, and permanent damage to
the brain and other organs.
