INMATES joined golfers, correctional officers, business leaders and other stakeholders at the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Commissioner-General’s Goodwill Trust Fund Golf Tournament held at Harry Allen Golf Club on 19 September 2026.
The participation of inmates added a unique correctional dimension to the tournament, which was organised to raise support for vulnerable members of the ZPCS family and disadvantaged communities.
The tournament was officially teed off by guest of honour and local businessman Jabulani Nkomo, with inmates among the golfers who took part in the event.
Speaking at the conclusion of the tournament, ZPCS Commissioner-General Dr Moses Cyril Ngawaite Chihobvu, whose remarks were delivered by Commissioner Sikhulekile Ndlovu, said the event demonstrated the power of sport to unite people behind a common cause.
“Today has demonstrated that sport can bring people together around a purpose greater than competition,” Dr Chihobvu said.
The Commissioner-General’s Goodwill Trust Fund was established to provide assistance to orphans of deceased ZPCS officers while extending support to other vulnerable members of society.
To date, the Fund has assisted 453 beneficiaries, with 271 having completed their education.
Currently, seven beneficiaries are enrolled at tertiary institutions, while 79 are at secondary school and 96 are attending primary school.
Some beneficiaries who have completed their education have subsequently joined the ZPCS, while the Fund has also contributed towards efforts to address gender disparities in access to education.
Beyond supporting the children of deceased officers, the Fund has extended assistance to other vulnerable groups, including persons living with albinism, child-headed families and persons with disabilities.
Its interventions have included the provision of food and agricultural inputs, sunscreen, wheelchairs and artificial limbs, as well as support towards the ZPCS staff hospital.
Dr Chihobvu expressed appreciation to Officer Commanding Bulawayo Metropolitan Province Commissioner Mkhulunyelwa Ngwenya, the tournament organisers, golfers, partners and other stakeholders for their contribution towards the success of the event and the continued work of the Goodwill Trust Fund.
