BINDURA – Mashonaland Central Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Christopher Magomo, has officially commissioned the Masembura Water Pipeline Project, a major water infrastructure project funded by Mutapa Gold Resources (Private) Limited in partnership with Bindura Municipality.
The project was commissioned on 21st September 2026, as confirmed on the official plaque unveiled by the Minister.
According to project details on the plaque, the scheme includes a 500m³ balancing tank, an 18km pipeline to Mutapa Gold Resources and a 22.1km pipeline to Bindura Municipality Water Treatment Plant. The project contractor is ZINWA Enterprises (Private) Limited, with funding partners being Mutapa Gold Resources and Bindura Municipality.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Minister Magomo said the project will transform water supply in the province.
“We are delighted that the water supply will improve. And also the cost of purifying the water will also be reduced, because contamination will turn really low. It’s one of my capital investment projects that are taking shape in the province,” Magomo said.
Mutapa Gold Resources, which is Zimbabwe’s largest gold producer owned by the Mutapa Investment Fund, says the US$3 million Masembura Water Pipeline is part of its broader community investment programme.
Mutapa Gold Resources Chief Executive Officer, Patrick Maseva-Shayawabaya, has previously said the company’s bulk infrastructure is designed not just for mining operations but for surrounding communities.
“The biggest beneficiaries of this project will be the community. The bulk infrastructure we are putting in place, including water and power, is being designed not only to support the mine but also to cater for surrounding communities. We are engaging ZINWA and ZETDC to ensure the infrastructure has built-in capacity so communities around us can also tap into it,” said Maseva-Shayawabaya.
“We can achieve a lot together rather than as individuals,” he added.
Background information shows Mutapa Gold Resources has invested nearly (US$) millions in community projects in Mashonaland Central and beyond.
These include the development of the Bindura Hospital Maternity Ward and rehabilitation work at Shamva Hospital, which recently benefited from the company’s inaugural Charity Golf Day that raised US$100,000 for three medical institutions including Loreto Mission, Shamva and Bindura Hospitals.
In Rushinga District, the company partnered with the Zimbabwe Defence Forces to double Mubvundudzi Secondary School’s enrolment capacity from 220 to over 400 learners through construction of a new classroom block, and donated 10 computers following electrification of the school.
The company has also partnered with the Zimbabwe School of Mines to train 315 artisanal and small-scale miners and is upskilling communities as part of its corporate social responsibility pillars of education, community well-being and sustainable livelihoods.
The Masembura project is expected to significantly improve clean water access for Bindura town while supporting Mutapa’s Shamva Mine expansion, which is set to create about 1,800 jobs.
