Children in Mbire and Saunyama are leading the push for climate justice through sports, showing that even as climate change threatens their communities, their voices still call for a safer, fairer future where they can play, learn, and grow with dignity.
With support from Simukai Child Protection, ActionAid Zimbabwe and ActionAid Greece, the children are saying there is urgent need to restore their land, protect water, and secure their climate.
Communities on the frontlines of climate change are already paying the highest price for a crisis they did not cause, while children carry the impact through disrupted schooling, worsening conditions, and growing insecurity.
Said Action Aid Zimbabwe:
“We are calling on policy makers and the Government of Zimbabwe to deliver a Just Transition that puts people before profit.
Without social justice, there is no climate justice. A healthy planet means dignity, safety, and livelihoods for all children, and all communities on the frontline.”
Zimbabwe, like many African countries, is experiencing the harsh impacts of climate change, including increased temperatures, erratic rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, and extreme weather events such as floods and cyclones. These changes have severe consequences on the country’s agriculture, water resources, ecosystems, and overall socio-economic development.
