Concerns have been raised over food hygiene practices at a canteen located at Chinhoyi Mall, formerly known as Boomerang Bar, in Harare following a visit to the food outlet on 15 October.

The visit reportedly raised questions about the hygiene standards being maintained at the establishment, with concerns that poor food-handling practices could expose customers to potential health risks.

Food safety remains a critical public health issue, particularly at eateries that serve members of the public daily. Failure to maintain proper hygiene can increase the risk of food contamination and food-borne illnesses, making it essential for food outlets to observe appropriate cleanliness and food-handling standards.
During the visit, an attempt was made to engage the canteen supervisor over the concerns observed. However, the response reportedly received raised further questions about the establishment’s approach to customer concerns.

When the issue was raised, the supervisor reportedly responded in Shona: “Uri kuda kudya zvakanaka kumba kwako here?” — loosely translated as, “Do you expect to eat properly at your own home?”
The response appeared to dismiss the concerns rather than reassure customers about the establishment’s hygiene practices.
Consumers who purchase food from public establishments have a reasonable expectation that meals will be prepared, handled and served in hygienic conditions.

Maintaining such standards is not merely a matter of appearance but an important safeguard against food contamination and related illnesses.
The concerns also come amid broader calls for improved food safety standards and stronger enforcement of regulations governing food preparation and handling in Zimbabwe.
The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) has a role in promoting consumer awareness and advocating for the protection of consumers’ rights, including access to safe goods and services.

Food outlets are expected to observe applicable food safety and public health requirements, while relevant authorities have a responsibility to ensure compliance through inspections and enforcement where necessary.
The concerns raised at the Chinhoyi Mall canteen highlight the importance of accountability, proper hygiene and responsiveness to customers who raise questions about the safety of the food they purchase.
