The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) has called for solidarity and urgent support for communities affected by the devastating hailstorm that struck Masvingo on October 5, 2026.
The storm caused extensive damage to homes, vehicles, businesses and infrastructure, leaving thousands of families in need of assistance as authorities assess the extent of the destruction.
In a statement, ZCC General Secretary Rev Wilfred Dimingu said the church body was deeply concerned by the impact of the disaster and called for a coordinated response to assist affected communities.
“The Zimbabwe Council of Churches stands in solidarity with the people of Masvingo who have been affected by the devastating hailstorm,” Dimingu said.
He said the disaster had brought significant suffering to families, particularly those whose homes and livelihoods had been damaged.
“We extend our prayers, compassion and support to all those who have lost property, homes and sources of livelihood as a result of this disaster,” Dimingu said.
Dimingu called on churches, Government, humanitarian organisations, the private sector and communities to work together in supporting the affected families.
“We urge churches and all stakeholders to respond with compassion and practical assistance to those in need. This is a time for solidarity, unity and collective action,” he said.
The hailstorm reportedly affected homes, schools, businesses, vehicles and other infrastructure across parts of Masvingo.
The disaster has also affected Great Zimbabwe University, which postponed its graduation ceremony after extensive damage to the graduation venue and surrounding infrastructure.
Dimingu said the church would continue to support communities during the recovery process.
“As churches, we remain committed to walking alongside the affected communities during this difficult period and supporting efforts aimed at recovery and rebuilding,” he said.
He also urged the public to continue supporting affected families as relief and recovery efforts gather momentum.
“We encourage all people of goodwill to contribute whatever assistance they can towards helping the affected families rebuild their lives,” Dimingu said.
