The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched an investigation into a fatal incident involving a police public order vehicle and a pedestrian at the National Sports Stadium during the Zimbabwe-Democratic Republic of Congo soccer match on Monday evening.
According to a statement issued on September 28, 2026, by Paul Nyathi, Commissioner and Chief Staff Officer (Press and Public Relations) to the Commissioner-General of Police, one person died during a stampede at Gate Number Two at around 6.30pm at the beginning of the match.
Nyathi said investigations were under way to establish exactly what transpired during the incident.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that swift and comprehensive investigations are currently under way after a fatal incident involving a police public order vehicle and a pedestrian at the National Sports Stadium where one person died during a stampede at gate number two at 1830 hours at the beginning of the soccer match between Zimbabwe and Democratic Republic of Congo,” he said.
Nyathi said the Commissioner-General of Police had expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that the investigation would be conducted objectively.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police assures the public of objective and comprehensive investigations to find out exactly what transpired,” he said.
He said a detailed statement would be issued in due course as investigations progress.
