The Passengers Association of Zimbabwe has expressed concern that some public ablution facilities in Harare have been converted to pay toilets.
Said PAZ in a statement:
“Commuters of Rezende Parkade, are facing a sanitation crisis.Free public toilets have suddenly been converted to pay toilets without notice, even though a paid toilet already exists on site.
” This has left elderly and low-income commuters stranded. Transport crew and touts are now forced to use plastic bottles.City Fathers, this needs urgent action. Urine, filth, and human waste has become the order of the day, creating a health hazard. Vendors are suffering too, despite of transport operators already paying for toilet access through their rank discs.”
PAZ appealed to Harare City Council:
“Our appeal is this: the majority of commuters who use free public toilets are low-income earners. They are being punished and segregated. We are asking Council to urgently rethink this new policy and consider its effects.”
No immediate comment could be obtained from Harare City Council.
