Matabeleland South  on Friday hosted the final provincial edition of the 2026 Amai’s Traditional Cookout Competition, bringing together Culture, Gastronomy and Community Empowerment in a vibrant celebration of Zimbabwe’s Heritage.

As the Rainbow Province, Matabeleland South showcased its rich culinary diversity through dishes such as umxaxa, amacimbi, ucaba, imbhokola, umbhida we delele, maheha, amatemba and isimgwa somfahla, while Professional Chefs added a modern touch with creations like umkhomo and inkelo cake, and sorghum empanadas.

The competition continues to reflect the vision of the Patron of Tourism Her Excellency the First Lady Dr Auxillia Mnangagwa, whose passion for indigenous foods has reignited pride in Zimbabwean cuisine while creating opportunities for women, youths and marginalized communities.

Aligned with His Excellency The President Cde. Dr E.D. Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030 of leaving no place and no one behind, the Cookout competition has evolved into a powerful platform for Tourism Development, Entrepreneurship and Cultural Preservation.

Representing the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Hon Barbara Rwodzi, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Dr Takaruza Munyanyiwa, reaffirmed Government’s commitment to positioning Tourism as a key driver of economic growth and sustainable livelihoods. He also highlighted Gastronomy Tourism as an important pillar of the Ilifa Lethu, Nhaka Yedu – Our Heritage campaign, which seeks to promote Domestic Tourism and celebrate Zimbabwe’s cultural identity.

With all provincial competitions now complete, attention now turns to the National finale, expected to be a grand celebration of Zimbabwe’s rich heritage and culinary excellence.
