Harare – The Citizens Against Economic Sanctions (CAES) is reeling from a corruption scandal involving its former member, Mr. Martin Zharare, who was expelled from the organization.
According to Wallace Matavire, Head of Security at CAES, Zharare is accused of embezzling CAES funds and has allegedly opened a splinter group to continue his illicit activities.
The CAES Board had held its last official meeting in Gweru few weeks ago where they discussed and finalized Zharare’s expulsion. However, a flier circulating online announces a fake CAES meeting scheduled for March 19, 2026, which the Board has disavowed.
Sylvia Dhliwayo, on behalf of the CAES Board, issued a statement dated March 17, 2026, stating, “No Meeting Planned by the Board on the 19th of March 2026.” The statement urged members to disregard any unofficial notices and wait for formal communication through proper channels.
“We have reported to the police , four counts of corruption and embezzlement to the police in Mt Darwin, Bubi, Binga, and Midlands ” Matavire said.
Zharare is also accused of exploiting the Presidential Inputs Scheme, allegedly compiling names of his family and community members, who are not CAES members, to receive benefits from the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) in Mamina , Mhondoro. Efforts to reach Zharare for comment were unsuccessful as his mobile phone was unavailable.
The CAES Board advises members to remain vigilant, focus on the amendment bill No 3, and follow only verified CAES updates.
