Harare – A shocking breach of trust has shaken Chikurubi Prison Camp, as Tawanda Prosper Javen, a prison officer, was arrested for selling dagga to inmates. Javen, who was overseeing the Maximum Security wing, was remanded in custody until February 2, 2026, for a bail hearing.

The arrest stems from a thorough search for dangerous objects at Chikurubi Maximum Prison, triggered by the attempted escape of Itai Madhongo, an inmate serving 45 years for rape and armed robbery. On January 12 2026, Madhongo stabbed a prison officer at Rotten Row court, donned the officer’s uniform, and attempted to escape. He was recaptured hiding behind wooden panels near the magistrates’ offices.

During the search, inmates were found in possession of dagga, and after minimal force, they revealed Javen as their supplier. A search of his house within the prison camp yielded 468 grams of dagga. An anonymous prison officer revealed that Javen exchanged dagga for cash and other favors, exploiting his position of power.

“The inmates were getting dagga in exchange for money and other things. We had to use minimal force to get the truth, and they pointed to Javen,” the officer said.

Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services National Spokesperson, Officer Khanyezi, was unavailable for comment, with attempts to reach her being fruitless.

This incident raises concerns about prison security and the role of corrupt officials. With many armed robbery cases involving security personnel, some of the citizens point to poor remuneration and lax oversight can lead to devastating consequences.

The fate of Tawanda Prosper Javen will be decided on February 2, 2026 for his bid to get bail.
