Harare – A 53-year-old man from Zvishavane has been sentenced to an effective 20 years in prison after being convicted of raping his 16-year-old daughter.
The Zvishavane Magistrates’ Court handed down the sentence following a case that shocked the community and highlighted ongoing concerns about sexual violence within families.
According to court records and a National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe dated 21 July 2026, the abuse began in February 2026. The court heard that the offender came home intoxicated and told the victim he wanted her to be his wife.
Prosecutors told the court that during the same month, the man threatened the teenager with a knife taken from his satchel and told her he wanted to sleep with her. He allegedly used her t-shirt to cover her mouth during the first attack.
The court heard that the abuse continued on multiple occasions after the initial incident.
The matter came to light following a tip-off to authorities, which led to the arrest of the accused. He was subsequently charged, convicted, and sentenced.
The NPAZ condemned the crime and all forms of sexual violence.
“The NPAZ condemns all forms of sexual violence. Such offences are a gross violation of human dignity, bodily integrity and the right to live free from abuse and fear,” the authority said.
The case adds to calls by government, civil society and community leaders for stronger reporting mechanisms and support for survivors of sexual abuse, particularly children.
Authorities are urging members of the public to report cases of abuse to the police, social workers, or victim support services. The NPAZ is also using the case to reinforce its #StopRape campaign.
Survivors of sexual violence can seek help from the police, local health facilities, or child protection services. Counseling and legal support are available through government and NGO partners.
