As we go about our daily lives, it’s easy to overlook the potential dangers that surround us. However, when it comes to high voltage electricity lines, ignorance can be lethal. Recently, I noticed Apostolic churches gathering beneath these towering structures in the Gazebo area of Harare and other parts of the city. While I understand the importance of freedom of worship, I feel compelled to raise awareness about the risks associated with camping beneath high voltage lines.
The Risks are Real
– Electric Shock: High voltage lines carry massive amounts of electricity, and being underneath them during a gathering can be disastrous. A single misstep or accidental contact with the lines can be fatal.
– Magnetic Fields: Some research suggests that prolonged exposure to electromagnetic fields from high voltage lines can have adverse health effects, although the evidence is still inconclusive. Some studies indicate exposure to electrical radiation causes cancer.
Rainy Season Increases the Danger
As we approach the rainy season, the risks associated with gathering near high voltage lines become even more real. Water and electricity can be a deadly combination, making it crucial to exercise caution.
– Increased Risk of Electrocution: Water can conduct electricity, making it more likely for people to receive electric shocks.
– Reduced Visibility: Rain and fog can reduce visibility, increasing the risk of accidents and making it more difficult to spot potential hazards.
A Call to Action
I urge the leaders and members of these Apostolic churches to take immediate action to ensure their safety. Here are some steps that can be taken:
– Find Alternative Venues: Identify safe and suitable locations for gatherings, away from high voltage lines and other potential hazards.
– Conduct Safety Assessments: Regularly assess the safety of the gathering areas to identify potential risks and take corrective action.
– Educate Members: Raise awareness among members about the dangers of high voltage lines and the importance of safety precautions.
A Collaborative Effort
I appeal to the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) and Harare City Council to work together to:
– Mark Danger Zones: Clearly mark areas beneath high voltage lines as danger zones to prevent gatherings.
– *Enforce Safety Regulations*: Strictly enforce safety regulations to prevent construction and gatherings near high voltage lines.
– Raise Awareness: Educate the public about the risks associated with high voltage lines and promote safe practices.
Let’s work together to prevent accidents and ensure a safer environment for all.
