The city of Gweru and Gweru City Parking continue to work tirelessly to come up with best ways to exempt senior citizens from paying parking fees, a senior council official has said.

Acting town clerk Livingston Churu said the Midlands capital had great respect for senior drivers in the city and will always attend to their needs.

“Contrary to some reports that senior citizens get raw deal from Gweru City Parking when it comes to offering them services, as a local authority we work tirelessly with our partner to attend to the elderly in the city,”Churu said.

“Most of the time whenever there are issues with motorists who are senior citizens l get a call from our colleagues from Gweru City Parking and such issues are resolved amicably.”

Churu made the responses last week at the state of the city address where some residents had queried whether senior citizens were getting favourable services from the vehicle management company.

He however said what delayed the registration of senior motorists was that some drove vehicles not registered in their names.

“Some of our senior citizens have cars that they get from their children without change of ownership,”he said.

“We would prefer a situation where the cars our senior residents own are registered in their names so that the facility is not abused.”

Over the years council has benefitted from Gweru City Parking’s corporate social responsibility programmes and remittances that have not only enhanced service delivery in the city but empowered the less privileged particularly persons with disabilities.
