CHIREDZI – The Zimbabwe Council of Churches (ZCC) has completed a two-day rice distribution exercise targeting hundreds of vulnerable returnee households in Mwenezi and Chiredzi districts as part of ongoing humanitarian assistance following the recent migration crisis in South Africa.

In an update on the exercise, ZCC said the distribution concluded on 28 October 2026, with assistance reaching vulnerable households in Chiredzi on the second day, following the initial distribution in Mwenezi District.
The rice was donated by the Chinese Government to support vulnerable Zimbabweans returning home amid the humanitarian challenges associated with the recent migration crisis in South Africa.

ZCC said part of the 20-metric-tonne rice donation had been pre-positioned at the Beitbridge Reception Centre to provide immediate food assistance to vulnerable returnees upon their arrival in Zimbabwe.
The church organisation expressed appreciation to the Chinese Embassy, Diakonia, the South African Council of Churches and Global Ministries for their contribution towards the humanitarian response.
“ZCC greatly appreciates the generous support and solidarity of the Chinese Embassy, Diakonia, the South African Council of Churches, and Global Ministries,” the organisation said.

The initiative highlights ongoing efforts by humanitarian organisations and development partners to provide essential assistance to vulnerable returnees and support their welfare as they navigate the challenges of returning home.
