ActionAid Zimbabwe is launching a new 10-year Local Rights Programme (LRP) in Chimanimani.
Said Action Aid Zimbabwe in a statement:
“Seven years ago, Cyclone Idai ripped through Chimanimani. Homes were washed away. Fields were destroyed. Schools and clinics were broken. The scars are still visible in communities still rebuilding.
Today we are turning that recovery into long-term power.”
“It builds on 7 years of humanitarian and climate justice work since Cyclone Idai and will be supported through Child Sponsorship — the heart of how we resource community-led change.”
Action Aid Zimbabwe said it will be launching a 10 year Local Rights initiative in Chimanimani.
“Over the next 10 years, we will walk with communities in 6 wards — 11, 13, 16, 21, 22 and 23 — with support from ActionAid Italy.
Together, we will focus on protecting women and girls’ rights and ending GBV. We will work to strengthen gender-responsive public education so no girl is left behind. We will grow livelihoods through agroecology and economic empowerment, while restoring the environment and building climate resilience.
” And we will strengthen community systems for humanitarian response and disaster risk management, so that the next shock does not set people back.
Years after Cyclone Idai, families still face limited opportunities and deep vulnerability, especially women and girls. That’s why long-term recovery and empowerment matters.
“We are proud to walk this journey with the people of Chimanimani , from surviving a cyclone to building community power together.
As we commemorate World Humanitarian Day, Cyclone Idai reminds us why it matters to put those most disproportionately affected by humanitarian crises at the center — to lead, to be protected, and to shape climate action for a just transition.
“This year’s theme, “Strengthening Global Solidarity and Empowering Local Communities”, is exactly what this LRP is about: local people, especially women and young people, driving solutions in their own communities.”
