Zimbabwe clinched a three-wicket victory over Ireland in the second T20 International on Sunday, securing a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Chasing a target of 138, Zimbabwe reached 141-7 in 19.2 overs, thanks to a match-winning knock by Tony Munyonga, who was named Player of the Match.
The match, played at Harare Sports Club, saw Zimbabwe recover from early setbacks after losing three wickets in the powerplay. Munyonga’s unbeaten 43 off 30 balls, including five boundaries, anchored the chase, while Richard Ngarava provided crucial support with 12 not out.
Earlier, Ireland posted 137-8 in their 20 overs after being put in to bat. Lorcan Tucker top-scored with 46 off 40 balls, while Harry Tector contributed a brisk 28 off 20 deliveries. Zimbabwe’s bowlers kept the visitors in check, with Trevor Gwandu taking 3-24 and Sikandar Raza claiming 2-22.
Ireland’s Craig Young was the standout bowler, finishing with figures of 4-24, but his efforts weren’t enough to prevent Zimbabwe from sealing the win.
The series opener was washed out due to rain, making this victory crucial for Zimbabwe. The final T20I is scheduled for Tuesday, with Zimbabwe aiming to wrap up the series.
