A rich tapestry of Faith, Flavour and Heritage unfolded at Murehwa High School in Mashonaland East Province as the United Methodist Church hosted its maiden Amai’s Traditional Cookout Competition, a colourful celebration marked by fellowship, song and cultural pride.
The event, a fusion of Religious Tourism and Gastronomy Tourism, drew 48 contestants from the Community, Youths and People with Disabilities categories and showcased the growing role of Churches in advancing the preservation and promotion of Zimbabwe’s indigenous cuisine and traditions.
Officiating at the event, the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry Hon Barbara Rwodzi said the initiative aligns with His Excellency The President Cde.Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa’s Vision 2030, devolution strategy and the philosophy of leaving no one and no place behind.
Minister Rwodzi also applauded the Tourism Patron The First Lady Her Excellency Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa for championing inclusive programmes that celebrate Zimbabwean dishes, strengthen family health and values, uphold the Zimbabwean identity, whilst empowering Women, Youths, and People with Disabilities.
She noted that such cultural initiatives are key pillars in advancing Zimbabwe’s Soft Diplomacy by showcasing the Nation’s traditions, hospitality and Culinary Heritage to International Tourists. The Minister urged Zimbabweans to take pride in local delicacies such as mapfura wine, mazondo and madora, which are increasingly attracting International interest.
The Church also expressed gratitude to the First Lady for initiating the transformative programme, describing it as a powerful platform for preserving Cultural Heritage, fostering unity and positioning Zimbabwe’s Indigenous Cuisine as an important tool for Cultural Exchange and National branding.
The Minister concluded by inviting the United Methodist Church to continue working together with the Ministry in various developmental programmes aimed at promoting Community Empowerment and Inclusive Tourism growth, underscoring the important role churches play in fostering socio-economic transformation.
