Beitbridge — Residents of Beitbridge have been warned to take precautions against extreme heat as temperatures in the border town are expected to reach 43 degrees Celsius today.

According to AccuWeather, the maximum temperature is forecast to hit 43°C, just 1.4 degrees below Zimbabwe’s official record high of 44.4°C, recorded in Beitbridge in 1941 and again in 1997.

Authorities have advised members of the public to stay in the shade between 12pm and 3pm, carry drinking water, and wear light clothing.

The warning also extends to livestock, with farmers urged to keep animals in shaded areas and ensure water is readily available.

Parents and motorists have been cautioned not to leave children or animals in vehicles, while residents have been advised not to burn rubbish or dry grass due to the high risk of veld fires.

Beitbridge is one of Zimbabwe’s hottest towns, and health experts say prolonged exposure to extreme heat can cause heatstroke, dehydration, and dizziness, particularly among the elderly, children, and those with underlying health conditions.

Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the peak heat hours, and check on vulnerable family members and neighbours.

The heatwave comes as most parts of Zimbabwe continue to experience high temperatures ahead of the rainy season, with the Meteorological Services Department urging the public to take heed of weather forecasts and stay hydrated.
