Harare – Zimbabwe’s defence sector is mourning the loss of Major General (Retired) Richard Ruwodo, who passed away yesterday at Avenues Clinic in Harare. He was 72.
The Zimbabwe National Army confirmed his death in a statement released by Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Hlengiwe Dube.
According to Col Dube, ZNA Commander Lieutenant General Asher Walter Tapfumaneyi expressed sorrow over the passing of the retired senior officer on 7 July 2026.
A career soldier, Ruwodo rose through the ranks to Brigadier General before retiring with the rank of Major General in August 2008. Over the years he became known as one of the army’s most decorated officers.
After leaving uniformed service, he remained active in public life. He served government in the Ministry of Defence and War Veterans’ Affairs, first in an acting capacity as Permanent Secretary, and later as Chief Director and Director for War Veterans’ Affairs.
Ruwodo was also a strong voice for former fighters. He regularly appeared before Parliamentary committees to push for improved pensions and economic opportunities for liberation war veterans.
He held leadership roles on several boards, including with the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association, where he helped drive projects aimed at empowering veterans economically.
He leaves behind his wife, Lois Ruwodo, and three children.
Family and colleagues are currently gathered at No. 92 Folyjon Crescent, Glen Lorne, Harare. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
