HARARE — The Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed the conviction and sentencing of three officers for criminal abuse of office following an anti-corruption operation.
On 3 July 2026, ZRP named the convicted officers as Constables Prosper Muchangani (36), Shelton Masvande (34) and Mercy Makarimai (37).
The three, who were stationed at ZRP Murewa Traffic and deployed at Chinamhora Base, were arrested on 21st December 2025. Detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department Police Anti-Corruption Unit found them in possession of USD 975.00 at a police roadblock at the 21 kilometre peg along the Harare–Domboshava Road.
According to ZRP, investigations established that no traffic fines had been officially receipted, the money had not been declared before duty, and there was no record of their deployment in the official deployment register.
The officers were each convicted and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment at Harare Magistrates’ Court on 24th June 2026.
ZRP said it remains committed to dealing with corruption within its ranks.
“The organization will continue taking decisive action against any officer who engages in corrupt or criminal activities, regardless of rank or position,” Commissioner Paul Nyathi, Chief Staff Officer for Press and Public Relations.
The public has also been urged to continue reporting incidents of corruption, bribery and other forms of criminal conduct involving police officers and other individuals in communities.
