The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) Matabeleland South Province on Wednesday held its belated Culture Day commemorations at Gwanda Prison Farm, promoting cultural heritage and inmate rehabilitation under the theme “Advancing Vision 2030 through Cultural Expressions.”
Deputy Officer Commanding Matabeleland South Province, Assistant Commissioner Jabulile Mathema, said inmates and officers should participate in national programmes that preserve Zimbabwe’s cultural heritage and promote inclusion.
Guest of Honour Chief Nhlamba of Gwanda South urged communities to safeguard cultural values and condemned drug and substance abuse among youths, saying it threatens ubuntu and traditional norms.
The event was attended by representatives from Government departments, the Joint Operations Command, local authorities, arts organisations and community stakeholders, including Deputy Director for Business and Development Tichaona Mudzviti, Acting District Development Coordinator Awakiwe Moyo, Gwanda Mayor Alderman Thulani Moyo, Gwanda Rural District Council Chief Executive Officer Ranganai Sibanda and Provincial Arts Council Manager Percy Vela.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police Women Network, led by Provincial Chairperson Chief Superintendent Bekezela Ndlovu, donated toiletries and winter clothing for children staying with their incarcerated mothers at Gwanda Prison.
Traditional dance performances by inmates and poet Lerato Ndlovu, popularly known as “Nqindi”, formed part of the celebrations, which were held across correctional stations in the province to promote cultural awareness and rehabilitation.
