HARARE — Zimbabwe football is facing pressure on two fronts after the Warriors suffered a 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in the Unity Cup in London last night, and Hardrock FC suspended its CEO over a matchday incident that led to a fixture being abandoned.
The Zimbabwe Warriors were beaten 2-0 by Nigeria in a Unity Cup clash played in London, sparking immediate backlash from supporters. Fans took to social media to vent frustration with the team’s performance and the leadership of interim coach Kaitano Tembo.
“Fans are demanding an immediate sacking,” one supporter wrote. Others posted blunt criticism in Shona: “Hapana Chinozvikanwa na Kaitano Tembo,” meaning “Kaitano Tembo knows nothing about coaching.” The loss has deepened disappointment over Zimbabwe’s form ahead of upcoming qualifiers.
The Zimbabwe Football Association has not yet commented on the calls for a coaching change. Tembo was appointed on an interim basis earlier this year, but last night’s result has intensified debate about the direction of the national team.
On the domestic front, Hardrock FC announced it has suspended Chief Executive Officer Mr Kudzanai Hove for an indefinite period pending the outcome of an investigation into an incident that caused a recent match to be abandoned.
The club strongly condemned “all acts of violence and vandalism,” stating such conduct is contrary to its values and “has no place in football.” Hardrock FC said it will work closely with the Zimbabwe Republic Police and other stakeholders to ensure those responsible are brought to book.
“The club extends its apologies to supporters of both teams, the wider football community, and the public for the regrettable events that occurred,” the statement read, signed by Communications and Media Liaison Officer Bruce Chikuni.
Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
Zimbabwe football now faces questions both on the pitch and off it, clubs moving to stamp out violence at matches.
