Firefight Trust has urged communities and citizens in Zimbabwe to prepare for veld fires as the country approaches the dry season in 2025.

In a recent statement, the Trust said this year’s good rains have resulted in increased biomass, making it crucial to take proactive measures to prevent and mitigate veld fires.

They said climate change has led to an increase in extreme weather conditions, including hotter temperatures, changing rainfall patterns and increased frequency of droughts. According to the trust, the conditions create a perfect storm for devastating veld fires. They said it is essential to take proactive steps to reduce the risk of veld fires and protect communities, wildlife, and natural resources.
The trust has urged communities, farmers and citizens to undertake some of the essential activities such as

Biomass reduction, implementing measures to reduce flammable materials, such as conducting controlled burns, clearing dry vegetation and disposing of combustible waste.
Preparedness training, ensuring that staff and communities are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to respond effectively in the event of a veld fire.
Tool readiness, verifying that firefighting equipment and tools are in good working condition, easily accessible and suitable for the task.
Awareness raising, educating staff, communities and neighbouring landowners about the risks associated with veld fires, the impact of climate chang and the importance of preparedness.
