Mhondoro Ngezi Crosspondent
The mining community in Mhondoro Ngezi Turf area is accusing Mhondoro Ngezi Rural District Council of declining to accept the local Zig currency, demanding US dollars when paying for rates and tariffs.
The residents also told The Blast that at times during the rainy season, water with a brownish colour comes from their water tapes.
“The main challenge we have as residents here is that Mhondoro Ngezi Rural District Council is refusing to accept the local Zig currency, when paying for council rates, taking advantage that the mine employees get US dollars salaries.Residents have no other option but to comply, but remember government made it clear that the local currency remains a legal tender. We hope that a corrective measure be taken in that regard,” said the residents.
The residents also complained that during the rainy season, they at times receive dirty, muddy and brownish water from their tapes.
“At times during this rainy season, brownish, dirty and muddy water comes from our water tapes and there is no explanation on this from council. The other issue is that council switches on street lights during month-end only..during the other parts of the months, the street lights are switched off, thereby exposing residents to muggings,” said the residents.
The local councillor for the area, Kurebwa Javangwe Nhomboka told The Blast to get in touch with council officials for a response to issues raised.
” I think council spokesperson is the best person to respond from where I seat as a councillor, we must thrive to do best. Our residents must not have complaints which take time to be resolved, that’s unprofessional.Thank you for letting me know of these allegations will investigate them and advise the council Chief Executive Officer and the Chairman,”said Nhomboka.
Mhondoro Ngezi Rural District Council spokesperson, Felistas Muchenje said:
” Unfortunately I was not in office yesterday but will however get back to you with responses.”
At the time of going to publish, council had not yet responded.
