Government has been called to urgently rehabilitate the tarred road between 52 and Mubaira growth point which is now an ‘eyesore’ of potholes.

Villagers and public transporters who spoke to The Blast said the road is now risky to use.

“We are calling on the authorities to immediately take action as the road has become impassible,” said a transporter who plies 52 -Mubaira route.

Some motorists who spoke to The Blast said authorities must desist from putting muddy patches that are not long lasting as they are easily washed away by the rains.

“This road needs some serious rehabilitation even it means scrapping the whole portion of the tar and putting a new one. It is sad to note that every year, the road authority uses mud to patch up the potholes. That method does not work as the rains easily wash off the patches. In fact, the road should be declared a state of disaster,” said motorists.

Some commuters said kombi operators are either shunning the route or are inflating fares.

“As a result of the bad state of the road, we now face a challenge of that kombi operators and other private vehicle that carry passengers are shunning the route or are inflating fares. Imagine paying $2 for a fare of a dollar from 52 to Kadhani business center;” said Kerina Matambo.

The 50 kms stretch of tarred road which connects 52 turn off and Mubaira growth point, was officially opened to traffic in 1995.
