Harare Residents Trust said it notes with concern that city council workers are not attending to residents’ queries citing that they are not being paid their salaries on time and are allegedly demanding bribes for service delivery to be done.
Harare Residents Trust said this is resulting in further deterioration of service delivery standards and putting the health of residents at risk.
“What is the best way for residents to express themselves and force the City of Harare to act on residents’ reports?”.
“Hundreds of reports are going unattended by city workers who always raise the issue of non-payment of their salaries and allowances as an excuse for not performing. Instead, the workers demand payment from residents to repair burst sewer and water pipes in the communities.
” What happens then when the council pays them, yet they would have left sewer flowing on the streets, potentially causing disease outbreaks?,” said the residents lobby group.
No immediate response could be obtained from city council but Harare mayor Jacob Mafume is on record saying residents must report corrupt council officials so that they can be brought to book.
