A convicted rapist, Itai Madhongo, serving a 45-year sentence, attempted to escape from Harare Magistrates Court by stabbing a prison officer, stealing his uniform, and disguising himself. He was recaptured shortly after hiding behind wooden panels near the magistrates’ offices.

Madhongo, who is also accused of armed robbery, allegedly attacked the officer, disarmed him, and forced him to undress, using the uniform as a disguise to flee. The incident has raised concerns about security protocols at the court, and an investigation is underway.

The injured officer is receiving medical attention at Parirenyatwa Hospital and is in stable condition. This is the second attempted escape from the courts in under a year, highlighting the need for enhanced security measures.

Implications of Jail Breaks

The recent jail break has significant implications for society and government, including public safety risks, loss of trust, overcrowding and poor conditions, recidivism, and economic burden. The government is taking steps to address these issues, including reviewing security protocols, improving prison conditions, and implementing rehabilitation programs.

Recent Prison Breaks in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe has experienced several notable prison breaks, including the escape of Stephen Chidhumo and Edgar Masendeke from Chikurubi Maximum Prison in 1997, and the escape of two inmates from Mutimurefu Prison in 1995.

The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service is working to enhance security measures and address the root causes of jail breaks, ensuring the safety of both the public and prison officials.
