The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched the crime and road safety awareness campaign ahead of the Independence and Easter holiday.
In a statement, Police urged the public to adhere to the roads safety measures and assist in preventing crime during the long holiday.
“The ZRP urges the public to cooperate with police teams which are conducting crime and road safety awareness campaigns for the closure of schools, Independence and Easter Holidays from 07th April 2025 to 22nd April 2025.
“In this regard, the public and motorists are implored to be crime and road safety conscious,”said Police.
At least 27 people were killed while 159 were injured in the 286 road traffic accidents recorded during 2024 Easter holiday. The death toll dropped marginally from the 29 killed in 2023 with the injury toll rising from the 145 last year during the same period.
A comprehensive analysis by the police found that most accidents recorded during the Easter holiday are attributed to speeding, inattention, misjudgement, overtaking error, and failure to observe road rules and regulations by drivers. All these kinds of accidents are preventable.
