The Albino Charity Organisation of Zimbabwe (ALCOZ) held belated International Albinism Awareness Day commemorations at Jairos Jiri Centre in Kwekwe last Saturday.

Said ALCOZ in a statement :
“We would like to thank our partners Stanbic Bank Zimbabwe, Zimplats, Nyaradzo Group,National Social SecurityAuthority for making this even possible.
“Key issues affecting persons with albinism were discussed, including climate change and its impact on persons with albinism. Participants were conscientised on the increased risks associated with prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight and changing climatic conditions, highlighting the importance of sun protection, access to sunscreen and other protective measures.”
ALCOZ added that the commemorations also touched on child protection.
“The programme also addressed child protection and safeguarding, with communities being encouraged to protect children with albinism from abuse, discrimination, neglect and other forms of harm.
The discussions emphasised the collective responsibility of families and communities to create safe and supportive environments for every child.
“Domestic violence was another important topic discussed. Participants were conscientised on recognising, preventing and responding to domestic violence, while encouraging individuals and families to speak out, seek appropriate support and promote safe, respectful homes.
As part of the commemorations, participants also received essential support items, including sunscreen lotions, sun hats, lip balms and sanitary wear, helping to promote health, dignity and wellbeing.
“Through these community engagements, ALCOZ continues to raise awareness, challenge stigma and discrimination, strengthen protection mechanisms and empower persons with albinism to participate fully and equally in society.
Together, let us build communities where persons with albinism are protected, included, respected and empowered.”
