HARARE — Excitement is building among beer enthusiasts, retailers and hospitality operators following the arrival of Carlsberg Pilsner on the Zimbabwean market, as Varun Beverages Zimbabwe prepares to roll out the internationally recognised Danish brand.
The beer is being introduced through Varun Beverages Zimbabwe under an exclusive distribution partnership with Carlsberg Breweries covering selected African markets, with Zimbabwe serving as the first phase of the rollout.
Varun Beverages Zimbabwe Chief Executive Officer Vijay Kumar Bahl said the response from the trade had been encouraging, with retailers already approaching the company for supplies ahead of the formal nationwide rollout.
“Retailers across different channels have already been approaching us seeking supplies, and the initial orders have exceeded our expectations,” Bahl said.
He said the first consignments of Carlsberg Pilsner had arrived from Greece under the initial importation and distribution model.
The entry of Carlsberg introduces another internationally established beer brand into Zimbabwe’s competitive beverage market, traditionally dominated by established local products.
For Varun Beverages, the development also represents an expansion beyond its established soft-drinks and snacks portfolio as the company continues to grow its manufacturing and distribution footprint in Zimbabwe.
Bahl said the current distribution phase was expected to pave the way for a major investment in local beer production.
The company is planning to transition from importing Carlsberg Pilsner to manufacturing the beer locally, with construction of a dedicated brewery already underway and production expected to commence next year.
The planned brewery investment has been reported at about US$250 million and is expected to strengthen local manufacturing capacity while creating opportunities across the wider value chain.
Local production could generate demand for agricultural and other locally sourced inputs, while supporting employment and opportunities for businesses providing goods and services to the brewery.
The partnership forms part of a broader agreement between Varun Beverages and Carlsberg to distribute the Danish brewer’s products across selected African markets, with Zimbabwe chosen to spearhead the phased rollout.
As distribution expands, Varun Beverages is also planning Carlsberg Taste Challenges, through which adult consumers will be invited to sample the beer and provide feedback.
Bahl said the consumer engagement initiative would form part of the company’s efforts to introduce the brand to the Zimbabwean market while preparing for the transition to local production.
The planned brewery is expected to further expand Zimbabwe’s beverage manufacturing base and could position the country as a production and distribution hub for Carlsberg products in the region.
