South Africa – Johannesburg and large parts of Gauteng are bracing for severe disruption on Tuesday, 30 June 2026, after the Control Tower’s Operational Intelligence unit issued a very high risk advisory for coordinated anti-migrant marches, trucker mobilisations and protest activity across the province.
The advisory, distributed to security, logistics and business operators on 29 June, states that the demonstrations are organised around opposition to undocumented migration. Security briefings note that in previous similar actions, documented foreign nationals and work permit holders have also been confronted, with participants accusing foreigners of taking jobs from South Africans.
The Johannesburg Inner City Cluster has been declared CRITICAL and advised as a no-go zone for the day. Areas listed include Park Station, Bree Taxi Rank, MTN Taxi Rank, Hillbrow, Jeppe, Cleveland, Yeoville, Orange Grove and Braamfontein. Townships including Alexandra, Soweto, Lenasia, Tembisa, Daveyton, Katlehong, Vosloorus, Tsakane and Kwa-Thema are also flagged as high risk. Sandton CBD is marked to monitor closely due to possible disruptions on Rivonia Road, Grayston Drive and Katherine Street. In Pretoria, a march is scheduled to assemble at Church Square at 10:00 and disperse from Sunnyside Police Station from 15:00.
Authorities expect activity in Joburg to run all day, peaking between 06:00 and 16:00, with possible spillover into the evening. The advisory warns of severe traffic congestion, road blockages, delivery delays and increased safety risks for drivers, vehicles and cargo. Key routes to avoid include the M1 and M2 Inner City Corridor, R21, N12 East, N3 near Vosloorus and Heidelberg, R25, and all major taxi rank precincts. For essential travel only, the N1 North, Northern Bypass and internal Sandton and Randburg routes are listed as safer alternatives, ideally before 09:00. Depot isolation has also been flagged for Isando and surrounding industrial areas.
The advisory instructs companies to avoid red zones, reroute or suspend deliveries, brief all drivers and maintain contact every 30 to 60 minutes. Escalation triggers include road blockages, protests at taxi ranks or in the CBD, and any reports of violence or looting. The directive to drivers is direct: “NO DELIVERY IS WORTH YOUR LIFE. IF UNSAFE – STOP, REPORT AND MOVE TO SAFE AREA.” Residents and commuters have been urged to work from home where possible, avoid all areas listed as red zones, and monitor official traffic and safety updates throughout Tuesday.
