An inmate at Harare Central Prison, Tinashe Kanamukwenje, has reached the finals of the Dreamstar Zimbabwe talent competition following performances at the Harare School of Music.
Kanamukwenje advanced to the finals after progressing through the preliminary and semi-final stages of the competition held in Belgravia in April, where he impressed judges with his confidence and vocal ability.
He is now expected to attend a boot camp ahead of the finals.
Harare Metropolitan Province Rehabilitation Officer, Superintendent Gwauya Mutuke, said the inmate’s participation reflected the role of arts and entertainment in rehabilitation and reintegration programmes within the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS).
“The participation of inmates in the Dreamstar Zimbabwe competition highlights the growing role of arts and entertainment in our rehabilitation and reintegration programmes.
“We are equally excited that Dreamstar allows offenders the opportunity to transform their lives through talent development,” he said.
Kanamukwenje expressed appreciation to Dreamstar Zimbabwe for giving him the opportunity to perform on a national platform.
“I am excited to reach the finals and I am very positive about winning because music is my passion and what I did today is proof that talent knows no boundaries, even if you emerge from behind prison walls,” he said.
Dreamstar Zimbabwe is partnering various organisations, including ZPCS, in talent search programmes aimed at nurturing musicians for the entertainment industry.
