Public invited to hard hat tour as construction gets underway

HARARE — The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has started land clearing for a new interchange at the junction of Harare Drive and Airport Road, marking the next phase in Zimbabwe’s push to modernize its road network.

The project will deliver a modern grade-separated interchange aimed at easing congestion and improving access to Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport. Once complete, the interchange is expected to cut travel time for commuters, airport users, and freight operators who currently face bottlenecks at the busy intersection.

Officials say the development forms part of the government’s broader infrastructure drive under the “Kilometer by Kilometer” program, which prioritizes road upgrades and maintenance to support economic activity and reduce vehicle operating costs.

The public has been invited to a ”hard hat site tour” to view progress firsthand. The tour is scheduled for 11 May 2026 at 10:00 AM on Harare Drive.

“This is your chance to see the future of Zimbabwe’s road network take shape on the ground,” the ministry said in a statement.

The initiative also aligns with the “Zero Tolerance to Potholes” campaign, as the government seeks to improve road safety and durability across the country.
