Shurugwi Town Council has set targets to be a model smart city with quality and affordable services within the next five years.

Council town clerk Archibald Ncube yesterday said the local authorities had set top priorities that include water provision, infrastructure development and rehabilitation, urban renewal and housing as well as engaging corporates and small to medium enterprises operating in the mining town.

“First and foremost water provision is my key priority so that people of Shurugwi have running water around the clock and this time informs my second priority, infrastructure development and rehabilitation which speaks to upgrading equipment as pipes, installing sewer systems in the suburbs that are lagging behind,”Ncube said.

“Promotion of small businesses is also a priority as everyone should be able to contribute and participate in the town’s development.

“We have shortage of housing and this is something that l will also address as we move towards being a model smart city by 2030.”

Ncube said the local authority has also set up plans to expand its boundaries.

“Shurugwi Town Council has embarked on a bold step to reshape the town’s future through its master plan, which proposed a 10km radius expansion,”he said.

“The expansion will incorporate surrounding farms such as Impali Source, Adare Farm, Little Impali, Terrain, Methanol, Terrain Farm and Magakooshla A and B.”

He said council recently secured US$10 000 and 600 bags of cement from Chinese mining company, Chengxi Chengetai Investments for the rehabilitation of Fenny Creek water tank.

The council boss also said the local authority completed the installation of a trunk sewer line from town to Manzimudhaka and surrounding suburbs that include Mambowa have since been connected to the line.
