Harare residents have received a major boost with the announcement by Mayor Cllr Jacob Mafume that the Kunzvi Dam will start impounding water with the expected onset of the rains this October.
Speaking at a pre-budget consultative meeting at the Kingdom People Church in Mount Pleasant on Friday, Mayor Mafume revealed that the dam, which has been under construction for sometime, will add up to 300 mega litres a day to Harare’s water supply.
This development is expected to bring significant relief to Harare residents. The additional water supply will help to alleviate the pressure on the city’s existing water sources, ensuring a more reliable and consistent supply to residents.
As the capital city, Harare supplies water not only to its residents but also to surrounding metropolitan towns such as Norton, Epworth, Chitungwiza, and Ruwa. The city’s water demand is substantial, with requirements of up to 1300 mega litres a day. Kunzvi Dam’s expected contribution of 300 mega litres a day will therefore go a long way in bridging the gap between demand and supply.
The development is also expected to have a positive impact on the city’s economy, as businesses and industries that rely on water will be able to operate more efficiently.
