Police has noted with concern over the increase in child abuse cases and rape involving minors across the country.
Police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi said it was worrying that the perpetrators of these cases are parents, close relatives and guardians of the minors.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is concerned with cases of sexual abuse and rape involving minors across the country.
In most cases, the heinous crimes are being perpetrated by individuals entrusted with the care, safety and protection of these vulnerable children. These include parents, brothers, nephews, guardians and other relatives. In some instances, strangers waylay the minors on the way to school and back, while some criminals lure the minors by offering sweets, money, drinks and lifts,” said Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
He added:
“Additionally, there have been disturbing reports of young girls being sexually abused by landlords and individuals with whom they share accomodation especially in urban set ups.In some cases prophets lure minors through parents or guardians on the pretext that they want to assist them.
“It is disturbing to note that some of these perpetrators are people who are expected to provide a safe and nurturing environment for these children.Instead, they are exploiting and abusing the trust placed in them.In some cases the parents will be at the forefront in either assisting the perpetrators or in concealing the offences.”
Commissioner Nyathi warned that parents and relatives who conceal cases of abuses will be arrested.
According to Commissioner Nyathi, in one of the abuse cases, a five year old girl was sexually abused by an unknown suspect while coming from school in a bushy area near Bravoland mine compound in Mberengwa on 25 February.
In another case, which occurred in Mutawatawa, Murewa district, a 13 year old girl was sexually abused by her 36 year old uncle after she had gone to collect food in the kitchen in September 2024.The case was reported to police on 26 February 2025.
In another case, reported at Lusulu police station, a 14 year old girl was sexually abused by her uncle from February 2024 to November 2024.The girl tried to report the abuse to the suspect’s brother but the perpetrator only got a reprimand. The offence only surfaced when the victim complained of stomach pains.
Commissioner Nyathi called upon stakeholders, who include members of the public, churches and traditional leaders in the fight against child sexual abuse.
