A recent training session on device repair and management for caregivers, parents, social workers, and CBR workers highlighted the importance of supportive seating for children with special needs. Led by Bigboy Madzivanzira of Health Promotion Clinic Trust, the training covered types of disabilities, basic management, and referral systems.

Participants shared field experiences and stressed the need for collaboration with schools, especially those catering to special needs. “A wheelchair is a prescriptive gadget – no one size fits all,” Madzivanzira emphasised.

“We’ve seen a lot of potential in our learners, but they need the right support,” said a special needs teacher from Glen View High 2. “This training has equipped us with the skills to provide better care and identify areas where we can make a difference.”

“I’ve learned so much about device management and referrals,” added a participant. “This will help me support my clients better and connect them with the right services.”

The training evaluation suggested a month-long training would be ideal to cover theory and practical aspects. Participants also highlighted a rise in stroke cases, recommending future sessions cover both children and adults.

The General Manager expressed interest in partnering with Health Promotion Clinic Trust for future trainings, including Sign Language courses.

A minimal fee will be charged for participants from outside Isheanesu, with attachments organised at the centre or similar institutions.
