In a move to protect local industries, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) has joined forces with the advocacy organisation Buy Zimbabwe to address the escalating issue of smuggling in the local market.
This collaboration aims not only to curtail the influx of smuggled goods but also to safeguard consumers from counterfeit products.
In an official letter dated February 19, 2026, Zimra affirmed its commitment to working alongside Buy Zimbabwe to devise effective measures to combat smuggling.
The revenue authority is ready to partner with Buy Zimbabwe to come up with measures on how to stop smuggling goods into the country.
Buy Zimbabwe Advocacy Officer Mr Elvis Masvaure , highlighted the importance of this partnership.
“The goal is not only to stop smuggling of goods but also to ensure that the local market is free from counterfeit products.”
Mr Masvaure emphasised that collaboration with Zimra is essential to protect local manufacturers from unethical trading practices.
Additionally, Zimra’s Commissioner of Customs and Excises, Mr Batsirai Chadzingwa, provided insights into the scope of the problem by listing products that are commonly smuggled into Zimbabwe.
“Fuel, alcohol, energy drinks, footwear, detergents, meat, confectionery, washing powder, clothing, and other groceries in general are the mostly smuggled goods in Zimbabwe.”
The persistent issue of smuggling poses a significant threat to the growth of the local industry, creating unfair competition for domestic producers.
Through this joint effort, both Zimra and Buy Zimbabwe hope to foster a healthier market environment for local businesses and consumers.
