The City of Harare has issued a 7-day ultimatum to owners of abandoned and broken-down vehicles to remove them from guarded car parks, shopping centres and open spaces.
This move aims to address concerns over public safety and security, particularly after a recent tragedy in Kuwadzana Extension where three missing children were found dead in a parked Mercedes Benz.
Council has instructed the Acting Director of Urban Planning Services to notify lessees of guarded overnight car parks to remove broken-down vehicles, car shells, and scrap from the premises.
Failure to comply will result in the council removing the vehicles at the owner’s expense.
City of Harare spokesperson Mr Stanley Gama confirmed the development emphasizing that the city is taking a firm stance on this issue.
The City will partner with relevant authorities to ensure total compliance.
“We will notify car parks and owners of broken-down vehicles to remove them voluntarily or we will be compelled to remove them. Those who fail to comply will face penalties besides their vehicles being impounded,” Mr Gama said.
This crackdown aims to improve public safety and security, while also addressing concerns over abandoned vehicles being used for criminal activities.
