The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) was today in Warren Park 1 suburb in Harare as part of its Green Week commemorations.
Speaking at the event, which had inclusive participants including people living with disabilities,CCZ chairperson for Harare Metropolitan, Beauty Chigora said the consumer watchdog will continue promoting sustainable lifestyles through promotion of indigenous foods.
“As the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ), we are proud to host this important event, and we deeply appreciate your presence. Over the years, this platform has increasingly proven to be a catalyst for meaningful action,”said Chigora.
“This year’s campaign runs under the theme “Promotion of Indigenous Foods”, celebrating local crops and dishes that are not only highly nutritious but also better adapted to Zimbabwe’s climate and soils.
“Green Action Week provides a unique opportunity for key stakeholders—from themed sectors, policy-makers, and law-makers—to deliberate on issues of sustainable production and consumption.
For the CCZ, however, it is especially valuable because it ensures that the voices of consumers are included in this critical discourse. In this regard, Green Action Week continues to strengthen the consumer agenda,”she added.
Chigora said it was prudent to safeguard the environment for the benefit of future generations in this time of climate change.
“A reflection on the past few decades reminds us of the immense challenges in safeguarding a safe environment for future generations. Today, humanity is grappling with hunger and climate change—crises largely driven by unsustainable human behaviour.
“Our challenge, therefore, is twofold: to support consumers through present difficulties while simultaneously enabling a rapid transition that secures sustainability in the long term. It is both timely and appropriate that this year’s theme focuses on sustainable consumption.
“That sustainable development can only be achieved through responsible environmental practices is no longer in doubt. We firmly believe that consumers may indeed be the missing catalyst for change. Each one of us has the potential to drive tipping points in sustainable consumption and production,”she said.
The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe’s Green Week initiatives focus on promoting sustainable consumption and environmental awareness.
Commemorations are being held in across the country.
