HARARE — At least 17 people died in multiple road traffic accidents during the Easter holidays, prompting government concern over road safety and the circulation of graphic images on social media.

In a post-Cabinet briefing on Tuesday, authorities confirmed several fatal incidents, including crashes that claimed entire families and football supporters.

“Cabinet expressed its deepest condolences following the report by the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Hon. Felix Mhona, on the tragic loss of six Mujuru family members in a road traffic accident on Thursday, 2nd April 2026,” Cabinet noted.

The government said another accident killed seven supporters of Highlanders Football Club along the Bulawayo–Beitbridge road.

“Cabinet also expressed its deepest condolences on the death of seven Highlanders Football Club supporters who died in a road traffic accident along Bulawayo Beitbridge road on Friday 3rd April, 2026; and the death of four family members in a road traffic accident along Shangani-Bulawayo road on Thursday 2nd April, 2026.”

The deaths bring renewed focus to Zimbabwe’s road safety record, with holiday periods often marked by spikes in fatal crashes.

Authorities said a full report on the Easter accidents would be presented later.

“A detailed report on the road traffic accidents that occurred during the Easter holidays will be presented to Cabinet in due course,” Cabinet said.

Cabinet also warned against the growing trend of sharing images of accident scenes online.

“Cabinet further expressed concern over the circulation of road accident scenes on social media platforms, and strongly discourages the public from engaging in such untoward acts,” read part of the minutes.

Officials signalled possible enforcement measures.

“In that regard, Cabinet warns the public that appropriate measures will be taken against anyone found responsible for such conduct,” the minutes said.
