The Zimbabwe National Organisation of Associations and Residents Trust (ZNOART) has expressed  grave concern over the escalating crisis of drug and substance abuse sweeping across  communities, in Zimbabwe.ZNOART said the scourge should be declared a national disaster .

In a statement , ZNOART national chairman, Shalvar Chikomba said the scourge which has become a national problem is destroying lives, tearing families apart, fuelling crime, and placing the future of Zimbabwe at serious risk of being wiped out.

“As ZNOART, we unequivocally condemn the proliferation of drugs and the networks enabling their distribution. The current situation reflects a failure of systems meant to protect citizens, particularly young people who are the most affected,” said Chikomba.

Chikomba said there was need for urgent multi sectoral measures to be taken to fight the scourge which is destroying the social fabric of the country.

“We therefore call for urgent and decisive action:

Immediate Arrest of Drug Peddlers Without Selectivity

Law enforcement must act firmly and impartially. There must be no sacred cows—everyone involved in the drug trade must face the full force of the law.

End the “Catch and Release” Practice

The revolving door of arrest and release must come to an end. It undermines justice and emboldens offenders.

Stiffer Penalties for Offenders
“Stronger sentencing laws must be implemented to deter drug trafficking and abuse. The punishment must match the severity of the crime.

Declare Drug and Substance Abuse a National Disaster
We call on Government to formally declare this crisis a national disaster to enable a coordinated, well-resourced national response.

Build More Rehabilitation Centres

Victims of drug abuse need support, not neglect. Government must invest in accessible, adequately equipped rehabilitation and reintegration facilities nationwide.

Channel More Resources to the Crisis
“Adequate funding must be directed toward prevention, treatment, enforcement, and public awareness campaigns.

Strengthen Border Controls and Accountability
As ZNOART, we demand transparency on how these drugs are entering our country. Authorities must tighten border controls and dismantle supply chains. This crisis is preventable if there is genuine political will.

Empower Community Organisations
Government must recognise and support the role of community-based organisations like ZNOART. Empowering grassroots structures will strengthen prevention, awareness, and community-led interventions.”

Chikomba called on government to put more effort to safeguard the future of generations especially the youths.

“Government must do more. It is its responsibility to safeguard the future generations of this country. The fight against drug and substance abuse requires urgency, accountability, and collaboration at all levels of society.

ZNOART remains committed to being the voice of the voiceless and to working with all stakeholders to combat this crisis,” he said.
