The City of Harare has warned residents to take heed of criminals posing as municipal police officers who are robbing motorists.
In a statement, the city council said it had also identified a gang that operates around Mbare, near Rufaro Stadium.
Read the statement:
“The City of Harare is aware of gangs of criminals masquerading as municipal policemen who are robbing residents of their money after forcing their way into peoples’ cars.
They approach residents accusing them of flouting parking bylaws and force their way into their cars before robbing them of cash and other valuables.
“We have identified some of them and appeal to those who fell victim to these criminals to report to the police so that they are arrested and prosecuted.”
The City Council added:
“The City of Harare has identified some in the gang that operates in Mbare especially near Rufaro Stadium who robbed a Beitbridge bound motorist last week.
Two of the suspects were captured on a video which went viral last week and were identified by residents.
We appeal to the victim to immediately report to the police or get in touch with Chief Supt Chendambuya of the City of Harare Municipal police on +263776304893.”
The City of Harare municipal police yesterday trapped and helped apprehend one Romeo Madododo (34) suspected of causing havoc among small business operators where he was threatening them and demanding bribes.
Madododo was caught in the act attempting to conduct an illegal transaction with one of his alleged victims just outside Town House while pretending to be a municipal police officer.
He is detained at Harare Central Police station facing charges of fraud and impersonation.
“We appeal to residents who may have fallen victim to Madododo to report their cases at Harare Central Police Station,” said council in a statement.
