More roadblocks, nationwide deployments part of festive safety, police chief says
“Refuse to pay a bribe,” police chief tells Zimbabweans

HARARE — Zimbabwe police have deployed officers across the country and intensified patrols, roadblocks and stop-and-search operations ahead of the festive season, citing heightened risks of road traffic accidents, crime and public disorder.

In a statement issued on Thursday, Police Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba said the Zimbabwe Republic Police had stepped up operations as increased travel, economic activity and public gatherings mark the end-of-year period.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police acknowledges the onset of the 2025 festive season, a period marked by an increase in travel and socio-economic activities, as well as large public gatherings across the country,” Mutamba said. “On the other hand, the country faces challenges of road traffic accidents, criminal activity and various violations of the law.”

Police officers have been deployed nationwide to conduct roadblocks, traffic blitzes and patrols in central business districts, residential areas, industrial zones and leisure centres, he said.

“Motorized, foot and cycle patrols will be intensified in all areas,” Mutamba said, urging residents to secure their homes when travelling.

The police chief called on motorists to comply with traffic laws, warning that defective or unroadworthy vehicles will be impounded.

“Road safety is a collective responsibility by all Zimbabweans therefore motorists are urged to comply with speed limits, avoid overloading and plan their journeys accordingly,” he said. “Above all, drivers should minimize night travel as some fatal road traffic accidents occur during these times due to vision and observation challenges.”

Police also cautioned the public against boarding unregistered transport operators.

“Members of the public are strongly discouraged from boarding non-public service vehicles, including pirate taxis and mushika-shika, for their own safety,” Mutamba said, adding that private motorists should avoid giving lifts to strangers.

With the rainy season underway, police urged motorists to exercise caution on slippery roads and avoid crossing flooded rivers or bridges, while encouraging passengers to report reckless driving.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police calls upon motorists to exercise caution on slippery roads and avoid crossing flooded rivers or bridges,” Mutamba said.

Police will also intensify operations along the country’s borders to curb smuggling and other illicit activities.

“Transporters and individuals involved in import and export activities must declare all goods at official ports of entry and exit, as the law will be applied without fear or favour,” he said.

Mutamba said provincial commanders had been instructed to take firm action against illegal liquor outlets and businesses selling alcohol to minors during the holidays.

“My office has directed Officer Commanding Provinces to take stern action on illegal liquor outlets during this holiday,” he said.

Police have also stepped up operations targeting drug and substance abuse, warning that distributors and suppliers will face arrest.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has intensified operations targeting drug and substance abuse in all communities and will take action against anyone involved in the distribution or supply of illicit substances to the youths and adults,” Mutamba said.

Zimbabweans were urged to remain peaceful during the festive period and observe laws governing the use of fireworks and firecrackers during New Year celebrations.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police does not condone any form of corruption, whether on the roads or during police operations,” Mutamba said. “Refuse to pay a bribe. Remember by paying a bribe you are equally guilty of the same crime.”

Members of the public were encouraged to report criminal or corrupt conduct to police stations or the National Complaints Desk.

“On behalf of the Zimbabwe Republic Police, I extend my sincere wishes to all Zimbabweans and visitors for a safe, peaceful, and accident-free festive season,” Mutamba said.
