The City of Harare has opened vaccination centers to curb against a possible Cholera outbreak during this rainy season.
In a statement, City of Harare said the Cholera vaccines are now available in clinics in hotspot residential areas.
“The City of Harare would like to advise the public that chances of being affected by cholera during rainy seasons are high.
The city of Harare would like to advise residents that cholera vaccine is available at our poly clinics and satellite clinics,”read the statement .
“These vaccines have been deployed in clinics in hotspot areas namely Glen View poly, Budiriro poly, Kwadzana poly, Rutsanana poly, Glen Norah satellite, Mbare, Mufakose etc.
Prevention is better than cure. Therefore, residents are advised to visit these places for free vaccinations against cholera.
Treatment of cholera is also for free.”
The local authority said it is fully prepared for any possible Cholera outbreak.
“The City of Harare is prepared and ready to deal with any suspected cases of cholera.
All those with symptoms of cholera which are diarrhoea with or without vomiting are advised to visit our clinics dotted around the city for early treatment to save lives.”
Cholera cases in Harare surged into 2024, with significant numbers reported from February to mid-2024.
The pandemic severely stressed Harare’s health facilities, disrupted education, and affected economic life.
Vulnerable groups such as women, children, and communities with poor sanitation were particularly at risk.
The drivers of the Cholera pandemic included contaminated water, poor sanitation, and community knowledge gaps fueled transmission, worsened by El Niño-induced drought and existing health system weaknesses.
