Gweru based land developer River Valley Properties is in the process of establishing a dumping site for diapers in Woodlands suburb to ensure a clean environment in the area.

Speaking at a monthly clean-up campaign the company’s chief executive Smelly Dube said pampers in the suburb have become an eyesore and potential health hazard as a result of uncollected refuse.

“What we have done as River Valley is to engage women in Woodlands so that we agree on a specific dumping site for dumping pampers where they would be collected by a truck we would provide,”Dube said.

“So we are saying people should properly dispose their pampers to a central point where they would be collected before eventually being dumped at council’s dumping site.”

Dube also said some houses in the suburb were still using the bucket system to dispose human waste as they were not connected to sewer and water lines.

“On that issue we have since engaged council to take drastic action against those not connected to sewer and water and continue to use unhygienic methods as the bucket system,”she said.

“As we heed government call for the national clean up exercise every first week of the month, we will continue to engage and partner with beneficiaries of our housing projects to ensure a clean environment is achievable.

“As we clean we would be educating the residents on the need to prevent the spread of diseases that can be caused by a dirty environment.”

Woodlands Residents Association chairperson, Obert Rupanga said residents welcomed River Valley’s approach saying it encouraged them to keep their areas smart.

“This is quite a noble initiative and we really want it to continue not only on national clean up days but on a regular basis,” Rupanga said.
